3D printing is a form of additive manufacturing technology where a three dimensional object is created by laying down successive layers of material. A 3D printer produces a solid object, rather than printing onto a 2D sheet like a conventional printer. The extrusion print head works in the x and y axes while the print bed on the Z axis lowers to allow the next layer to be printed on top.

3D Printing Technologies

Quite a few technologies are capable to do 3D printing. The main differences are how layers are built to create parts.

SLS (selective laser sintering), FDM (fused deposition modeling) & SLA (stereolithograhpy) are the most widely used technologies for 3D printing. Selective laser sintering (SLS) and fused deposition modeling (FDM) use melting or softening material to produce the layers.

Many different materials can be used for 3D printing, such as ABS plastic, PLA, polyamide (nylon), glass filled polyamide, stereolithography materials (epoxy resins), silver, titanium, steel, wax, photopolymers and polycarbonate.

While the printer is laying the model down onto the heated platform, the printer, using the same extrusion head lays down low density support structures. If you imagine printing a standing up letter “T”, it would require supports to be laid all the way up to the top, so the 3D printer has a base to print the crossbar.

Yes, the support material is the same plastic as the model. The support material is attached to the model at “pinpoints” so that it easily tears away.

We have a range of vividly colored filament.

Our filaments have been tested and conformed to our 3D Printer’s specifications. It is not recommended to use other filaments as they can cause damage to the extruder head and machine.

To have more than one color in a single object, you must change out the filament during the printing process. This can easily be done by pausing the print in the software, and then using the utility to back out the existing filament and initiate the extrusion of the new filament.

The model needs to be designed and/or modified in a CAD program like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, SketchUp Pro or even TinkerCad and then imported as an “STL” file.
